Thinking About Starting a Cleaning Business in Maryland? Here’s What I Learned

share this post:

I didn’t start my cleaning business just to clean houses. Starting a cleaning business in Maryland became something much bigger for me than just work.

I started it because I wanted something real. Something I could build. Something I could actually be proud of.

There’s something about taking a space that feels chaotic and turning it into something clean, calm, and put together. And honestly, that feeling never gets old.

And let me tell you, I never thought I’d be over here building a website, learning domains on GoDaddy, figuring out how to start an LLC in Maryland, and writing blogs… but here I am, trying to make it entertaining too.

Lessons I Learned Right Away

One thing I learned very quickly is that starting a cleaning business is about a lot more than just cleaning.

There’s the business side nobody really talks about enough. Things like learning how to price jobs correctly, figuring out business licenses and insurance, understanding contracts, and even learning how to bid on jobs through state and local websites.

I also realized pretty quickly that certifications and professionalism matter more than people think, especially if you want to grow beyond small side jobs and eventually work with property managers, offices, or commercial clients.

And honestly, one of the biggest lessons was learning that people aren’t just paying for cleaning. They’re paying for reliability, trust, communication, consistency, and peace of mind.

That’s when it really clicked for me.

This wasn’t just something I was good at. This was something I could actually build into a real business.

Things Nobody Tells You Before Starting

Looking back, there are definitely a few things I wish more people had been honest about before I started.

One of the biggest things is this:
When you own a business, you become everything.

You’re the owner.

The salesperson.

The scheduler.

The customer service rep.

Marketing team.

Website builder.

Accountant.

Social media manager.

Sometimes even your own emotional support system.

Honestly, time management becomes one of the most important skills you can have.

Nobody really talks enough about how important it is to create a schedule for yourself and actually stick to it. Not just for cleaning jobs, but for every part of running the business.

How much time are you spending finding clients?

How much time are you spending answering messages and emails?

How much time are you spending building your website, learning marketing, posting on social media, handling paperwork, pricing jobs, or researching certifications and licenses?

Because if you don’t create structure for yourself, it’s very easy to feel overwhelmed.

I also learned pretty quickly that building a business takes patience. Most successful businesses are not built overnight, no matter what social media tries to sell people.

And honestly, there are going to be days where you question yourself.

Days where you feel behind.
Days where nothing goes as planned.
Days where you have twenty tabs open on your laptop trying to figure everything out at once.

But I think that’s a normal part of building something from the ground up.

The important thing is continuing to move forward anyway.

Questions I Think People Should Ask Before Starting a Business

If you’re thinking about starting a business, I honestly think it helps to slow down and ask yourself a few real questions first instead of just chasing whatever social media says is trending.

Because building a business takes time, consistency, patience, and a whole lot more than people realize.

Here are a few questions I personally think are important to ask yourself before jumping in:

At the end of the day, I think the best businesses usually come from people building something they genuinely care about instead of just chasing trends.

For me, that ended up being cleaning, helping people, and building something meaningful one step at a time.

Why Small Businesses Still Matter

Small businesses are personal.

You’re not just hiring a random company. You’re supporting real people trying to build something meaningful from the ground up.

And in a world where everything feels rushed and automated, that actually matters.

If you’re thinking about starting your own business, I highly recommend learning the basics early.

Things like websites, domains, and LLCs can feel overwhelming at first, but they’re part of building something that lasts.

You can learn more about websites and domains through GoDaddy.

And if you’re in Maryland and trying to start an LLC, Maryland Business Express makes the process much easier to understand.
